The Smart Homeowner’s Guide to Natural Lawns in the Western Cape

Tailored Tips for a Mediterranean Climate with Winter Rainfall

The Western Cape’s unique climate—marked by wet winters and long, dry summers—requires a carefully considered approach to natural lawn selection. From the Atlantic coast to the Winelands, your lawn needs to work with nature, not against it.

Here’s our expert guide on which natural grass varieties thrive best in the Western Cape, when to plant them, and how to ensure sustainable growth all year round.

Kikuyu Grass

☀️ Sunlight: Full sun only

💧 Water Needs: Moderate to high (summer irrigation essential)

❄️ Winter Performance: Dormant and brown in cooler months

🗓️ Best Planting Time: Spring (September to November)

Why Choose It: Kikuyu is fast-growing and self-repairing, ideal for active households with pets and kids. It thrives in sunny, open spaces like Durbanville, Stellenbosch, and Somerset West. However, it needs consistent summer watering, so it’s not suited for water-restricted gardens.

LM Buffalo Grass (also known as Berea in some regions)

☀️ Sunlight: Tolerates semi-shade to full sun

💧 Water Needs: Low to moderate once established

❄️ Winter Performance: Stays green longer than Kikuyu

🗓️ Best Planting Time: Spring to early summer (September to January)

Why Choose It: Popular in Cape Town’s southern suburbs and coastal gardens, LM Buffalo is soft underfoot, lush, and highly water-wise once established. It performs well in shaded areas, requires less mowing, and holds its colour well through winter—ideal for low-maintenance, high-impact gardens.

Durban Berea Grass (Durban Grass – Not LM)

☀️ Sunlight: Prefers filtered light or semi-shade in coastal areas

💧 Water Needs: Moderate

❄️ Winter Performance: Not frost-tolerant; struggles in inland cold

🗓️ Best Planting Time: Spring (September to November)

Why Choose It: Traditional Berea (Durban Grass) forms a thick green lawn in warm, sheltered gardens with mild winters—best suited for areas like Fish Hoek, Noordhoek, and coastal KZN. Avoid in exposed or inland areas prone to frost, where it may not thrive.

Cynodon (Bermuda Grass)

☀️ Sunlight: Full sun

💧 Water Needs: Low to moderate

❄️ Winter Performance: Goes brown in winter but revives fast in spring

🗓️ Best Planting Time: Late spring (October to December)

Why Choose It: Ideal for sandy soils in places like Blouberg, Melkbosstrand, and Bellville, Bermuda grass is tough, low-growing, and durable. It's perfect for areas with high foot traffic and limited rainfall.

When Should You Plant?

  • Best Season: Spring (Sept–Nov) — take advantage of late rains and allow roots to establish before summer.

  • Caution: Avoid planting in peak summer (Dec–Feb) without irrigation.

  • Autumn planting (March–April) is only advised if supplemental watering is available.
